BPM and CIM MOTOR CONTROLLER

I am trying to get a basic understanding on the different types of controllers for variable speed BPM and Induction motors. How they work, the differences, pros and cons, etc. I don't need to design them, I just need to be able to talk intelligently about them. Any good books, seminars, or articles that would help me out??
