What factors govern whether a vessel should be designed to Section VIII div. 1 or Section VIII div. 2?

Thanks.

As a general rule.

Weight & Thickness

Offshore platforms prefer div 2 because less weight.
Currently thicknesses are not that different since Div 1 raised allowable stresses, but Div 2 is being changed to raise it's allowable stresses so there will be a greater difference.

Div 2 uses a higher allowable stress by utilizing much more stringent NDE requirements and design requirements.

ASME is also being changed so that it can compete with the European codes

we get asked regularly if we want to build to PED.
NO, too much trouble for certification and inspection here in the states. Besides, we have more work than we can do right now. Maybe later, if things take a down turn.

Now, if with the new changes PED takes the ASME stamp as ok with no additional inspection...NOW that would be a good thing.
