I am trying to determine the wall thickness for brass C36000 and need the allowable stress values. I can't find it in the BPVC. Can someone point me in the right direction?
Depending on the application for the brass alloy, you may have to select your own criteria for allowable stress based on a percentage of the yield strength, as an example.
I'm sorry for not being very clear. Let me clarify...
I am designing a fixture to be used for pressure testing that our lab technicians perform in our testing facility. It does not need to be per any particular code, I just want to make sure it will perform as needed and be safe. It must be made from brass barstock (UNS No. C36000) and may be pressurized up to ~5000 psi. I need to determine the wall thickness needed for the 'pipe' portion of the fixture. I have previously only dealt with stainless steel alloys and that is why I had mentioned the BPVC. I do not know where else to go to find the allowable stress for this brass so I can do the minimum wall thickness calculation from the BPVC.
Yes, you can do this on your own. Is the pressure test water or pneumatic and at what temperature?
Regarding allowable stress, I would use either the yield strength/2 or tensile strength/4, whichever is lower value.
What ASTM spec are you using? B16?
You can either resort to ASME IX for the UTS of B16 UNS C36000, and use metengr's suggestion, or lookup the actual B16 UTS and YS values and apply metengr's suggestion to get the allowable stress, provided the test takes place at ambient temperature.
