Brick Structures

I am in a municipality that still has a number of standards calling for brick structures such as: manholes, inlets, Y connections, bellmouths, etc.

I believe that there really isn't a need for these structures because precast can be made to accommodate any situation and generally is installed quicker and cheaper.

Further, I would say that there is no need to include them in standards anymore.

Any thoughts?

We do not use brick structures in any of our specifications.

Not only is precast (or cast-in-place) more cost effective, the leakage rate is lower. In sanitary situations, this means lower treatment costs.

Many of the older brick structures are now having to be replaced, repaired, and/or lined. The concrete structures have a longer lifespan in most instances. The bricks hold up well; but, the mortar doesn't.

Just my 2 cents.
