Bridge Collapse

The collapse a few years ago, they said, was a new bridge under construction.

This bridge has been in service for about 40 years they said.

Two very different situations.

I think in this case, the city inspector's department failed. If concrete chunks are falling, the bridge and road beneath should have been closed right away.

Its funny how a bridge collapse in Canada gets minimal media coverage yet such a collapse here in the US would probably lead to a Congressional Investigation.

Is it getting minimal media coverage in Canada?

I can't say that there was a whole lot of national coverage here for the girder that fell in Colorado last year. The Big Dig tunnel failure got more coverage because Big Dig awareness in general is pretty high.

speaking as a person living in Toronto (it's about 7-8 hrs drive away), it's got quite a bit of coverage. The province of Quebec immediately initiated an inquiry. In Toronto, the government quietly initiated a check of their structures and assured ppl everything was safe.

It's had a fair bit of coverage in Ontario. It has been the prime story but it hasn't dominated the news time slots. Until reports come out of the inquiries it will become "old news" very quickly.

It's getting coverage out west as well, for a couple of days. Anytime a bridge falls down, there has to be concern. Chances are, there are lots of other similar bridges elswhere.
