I was looking for ideas for railing that could be used on an 1-story elevated parking platform. I am trying to avoid a concrete wall/spandrel due to client preferences. I have not found any fabricators of bridge railing that could suit my needs. Most state DOT drawings only indicate concrete railing (that being that it is crashed tested).
Thanks

Before "New Jersy Barrier" became the standard for highway bridges in the 1970's, quite a number of nice looking, heavy duty aluminium alloy handrail designs were available and used on bridges by state DOTs. I doubt if these are still manufactured

Here is one list of potential sources:

For a longer list of possible sources, go to the Thomas Register web page and search on "handrail"

I see over 40 listings, but did not check on any of them.

In the UK, motorway and trunk road bridge parapets are steel or, more commonly, aluminium. I don't know which European parapet manufacturers also sell in the USA (I assume from your mention of state DOT drawings that you are in the USA).

TxDOT is having a push for aesthetic barrier. Check their website at and see if the standards are online. (I think the "e-business" link will start you in the right direction.)
