We have an Agilent 33120 function/arbitrary waveform generator that someone applied -15V to the AM modulation input on. We are trying to repair it, but the repairs haven't been going too well. We have schematics, but when the generator turns on, the display comes on with every symbol illuminated, and several relays click on and off continuously. We have tried holding down SHIFT when turning it on to force a self check, but whatever has failed seems to be pre-empting the check.

Anybody have any experience with these things? Thanks...

I'd sure like to see a dediated section on this board for test equipment repair. I have an adiction for buying equipment that doesn't work (anyone have info on a Clarke Hess 255 VAW?) and almost all of the time get them working. I find it hard to believe that only 15V could cause the problems you indicate. Most manufacturers include protection against inputs of that kind. I do believe the operator did something, just not that. I find a good visual inspection with a magnifying glass is as valuable as all the other test equipment.

"...a good visual inspection..."

Amen. Trouble-shooting often (but not always) leads to a fault that was visible to begin with and could have been found in minutes rather than hours.

OperaHouse,

I was having much the same thought just a few days ago. I'll suggest it to the site administrators - hopefully a few others will support the idea.

You certainly have my vote, if it counts. :)
