I have a 5-story block and plank residential building in the US, IBC 2018, Seismic Design Category C.

Each apartment unit will have masonry divider (shear) walls and the corridors will have masonry shear walls in a portion of the length.

We're trying to locate the building expansion joints. Tech Digest 65 says we can span 277 ft for our location.

Ideally, I would put them in the four corners of the building but the Architect will likely object.

I'm looking for input from others. Would there be a reason to object to the two locations shown in the graphic?

I usually try to avoid L, T and U shaped structures (or at least limit the length of the outstanding wing) per this article: AISC Modern Steel Steelwise 2011.

I feel the building will really want one at that 32 foot wide area at both the top and bottom. And then, as you indicated, you'd want matching ones on the other sides.

Your locations likely will suffice however.

My suggestion is in the midway of the length (263'-4") and across the width, so it will leave 2 U-frames, assuming the white out area is the court.

HTURKAK: Good location... now, the problem of constructing them...

HTURKKAK's suggested locations make sense. The others, not so much.

HTURKAK nailed what I was trying to describe. That's just where the building is going to want to do it naturally.

IMO, the fewest joint in a structure is less troublesome and easier to construct. Provides the permissible length is up to 277'.

Suggestion given by HTURKAK seems best. but finally depend on Architect. To utilize full length, other option is
