Building Lightning Protection 1

It was determine that lightning protection is required for both the yard equipment (transformer, open busses, switchgear, etc) and the two story building housing a 69 kV GIS substation.

a) What standard is suitable to use as a guideline NFPA 780 (Standard for the Installation of Lightning Protection Systems) or the IEEE Std 998 (IEEE Guide for Direct Lightning Stroke Shielding of Substations)?

b) Any issue using different methods or standard for the yard equipment and the building considering that each lightning protection are considered independently of each other.

Most Substations these days use the rolling sphere method for the erection of lightening spires with a direct connection to ground from the base of the spire, the rolling sphere principle uses the pattern of where the lightening strikes have the most engery with an intersecting area of approximately 40m apart as best to catch the concentrated energy of the strike.
You will have to do a bit more research as the area of installation would be a major consideration as that may dictate more suitable applications.
 
I would use NFPA 80 for the building and IEEE 998 for the yard equipment. You can use the building as part of the IEEE 998 protection.
