Does anyone have experience with providing fire water deluge system over 60,000 gal butane storage tanks. Also anyone with experience using Passive Fire Protection coatings on butane storage tanks that are also covered by a 250 GPM fire monitor; in lieu of a water deluge system?
Any ideas will be appreciated.

I have experience with both. I also have experience with NFPA 58 and for the most part, this standard does not require either passive or active fire protection.

If you have a reliable water supply, I would prefer active versus passive fire protection.

However, with the current valve designs available, I believe an internal valve combined with excess flow valves and a means of closing the internal valve upon fire exposure is probably the most reliable and less expensive method. For additional safety, vapor detection integrated with a MOV provides even greater protection.

What is the size and location the nozzles? Is the butane odorized or non-odorized?

Thanks Stookeyfpe,
We are in the early stage of building an oil terminal. We have 9 each 60,000 gal butane tanks planned.
The original plan showed only a 250 gpm monitor to cover the butane farm.
We are getting different opinions now concerning the butane tanks and the type of water spray system that is required.
I'll try to find out more and get back to you.
Thanks

Based on the wetted area of a typical 60,000 gallon ASME vessel, I don't see how a single 250 GPM monitor will work. Your stream distances will prohibit a single nozzle from protecting all of the vessels.
