Butt Welds vs Groove Welds

Hello,

I need to go through the design process for a butt weld, but the AISC manual does not have a specification for it. From pictures, butt welds and groove welds (which are in the AISC manual) look like the same thing. Does anyone know if they are? Thanks!

Butt welds are groove welds; however, not all groove welds are butt welds.

Butt welds are to groove welds as apples are to pies. (Sorry about the SAT flashback).

A butt weld is a joint between two members aligned approximately in the same plane. Versus - corner weld, tee weld, lap joint, etc.

A groove weld is a weld made in a "groove" between the two members (i.e. beveled plate edges). Versus - fillet weld, plug welds, etc.

SO a butt weld may be a groove weld, but not necessarily and a groove weld may be a butt weld, but not necessarily.

Lincoln Electric and AWS have some really good books on the fundamentals of welding and weld design which might be well worth your reading, given your question. Lincoln has several books by Omer W. Blodgett which are particularly good for the design of welds, for engineers.

Butt welds and groove welds are on occasion used by some to mean the same thing. They are not, each provides a unique description of the type of weld joint. For example, a butt weld describes a type of weld joint between two materials. A groove weld also describes the type of weld joint profile.

You forgot to mention that the books by Blodgett from Lincoln Electric are obscenely cheap. Last I checked, they were $20 each for solidly built reference books. An amazing deal.
