Can anyone tell me if Lockheed ever thought of the possiblilty of adding magnetic dipsticks to the external fuel tanks, and if so, is there a link to this information?

Magnetic dip sticks are how you determine the fuel quantity on a 60s vintage airplane when the fuel quantity indication system was inop.

You unlocked and released a dip stick that dropped down on the lower side of a wing tank. A magnet at the end of the stick helped you find the height of a float in the tank. You read the numbers on the stick and compared it to tables in a pitch and roll manual to determine the fuel quantity.

Other types of sticks would weep fuel when the top of the stick was lowered just below the fuel level. Between the 727 and DC9 I cant remember which one had the magnetic floats.

I don't recall what the alternate FQI method was on the L-1011. I'm sure someone at Lockheed knew about them at one time at least.
