C70600 (90:10 Cu:Ni) as a base for sealing surfaces for o-rings

Does anyone have experience with using C70600 as a base material with o-ring seals in salt and fresh water environments? We are looking to replace a few plastic fittings with a more robust material and were looking at this as an option.

You need to be careful about your o-ring materials. Some will cause crevice corrosion of the 90/10. I would be more specific but I can't remember.

CuNi has been used for decades as seawater piping on many marine vessels, and some classes use o-rings as the seal between flanges.

Don't know off-hand, though, the type of o-ring material that is common.

 

If you use Cunifor exclusively for piping in a sea water system , you can expect heavy corrosion of the baser metals in heat exchangers etc. A sacrificial spool piece fitted at the sea water inlet of your sea water system will help to prevent such corrosion. The spool piece will require replacement approx each year,so keep a spare handy.
Buna rubber is adequate for seals in a sea water environment,but ensure you fit a ground strap across flanges to prevent corrosion from stray currents.
