Cable, Uses Permited

Article 400.7, NFPA 70, seems to prohibit the use of cable as a primary power feed, 600V, to industrial equipment, unless the installation is temporary. Yet I can buy bus-drop cable, and the manufacturer specifically calls out NFPA 70, Article 368, and states that the cable is suitable for use as branch drop wiring from busways. I cannot find Article 368 in my edition of NFPA 70, 1996. Can anybody help clear up the apparent discrepency?

First: Unless you're in a jurisdiction that is still using 1996 (wow!) put your 1996 copy into long-term storage and buy the 2002 edition. If for no other reason than that 2002 was a major revision that moved the various Articles around big-time, and you'll have a hard time cross-referencing 2002 references against the table of contents of any older editions.

Anyway. . . .

In 2002, Article 368 is Busways. In 1996, Busways was Article 364.

The key paragraphs for you are 400.7(A)(6)[same location & text in 1996 & 2002] and 368.8(B) [which is nearly identical to 364-8(b) in your 1996 edition]. So long as you meet the restrictions in 368.8(B)/364-8(b), you're golden.
