CAESAR & ASCE 7-10

Our Pipe Stress Engineer told us that Caesar does not currently have the ability to do Wind and Seismic loads per ASCE 7-10. However the Client Specs require ASCE 7-10. The Client thought we could manually input ASCE 7-10 wind and seismic design parameters into Caesar but our pipe stress engineer has been unable to determine how to do this. He has called Caesar support on several occasions and he has not received any response yet. I appreciate your input.

If you are talking about static analysis you are able to insert the occasional loads (wind pressure against the elevations and the seismic loads as lateral and vertical gravity loading-factor of g). But you need to work out these occasional loads by hand in accordance with ASCE 7-10 as your client suggested.

Please note that the pipe stress engineer need to know how to derive these loads by going through the ASCE 7-10 relevant sections. So you need to provide this standard to the pipe stress engineer to get it done.

I have seen many consultants do not have necessary codes to provide engineers to work with. So therefore engineers expect everything from the software. This is wrong. The software is a tool to manage the analysis faster. No one expects the flexibility analysis done by hand with the complexity that we are given today. However the wind and seismic loads are expected to be driven and inserted to the analysis by pipe stress engineers. If pipe stress engineer are not familiar or comfortable with this code they need to ask structural engineers for help.

I believe that COADE is trying to update the Caesar II to be able to comply with all the current version of the codes. As you may imagine this is not possible immediately after new version of each code comes out and I guess COADE does not give priority on this since users have options to insert loads.

Please note that I am not part of COADE or INTEGRAPH, however I see this from my experience.

ASCE 2010 will be addressed in CAESAR II 2016 (v.8.00).
