I posted this on the COADE site as well, but it's not even being read... not much traffic there right now I guess.

Strange things going on with Springs...

I have a model with Weight Temperature Displacement + Wind. Plus Spring Hangers.

No Pressure... actually slightly negative pressure but CAESAR doesn't seem to take negative pressure anymore. I could swear I had done some long ago with negative pressure. Anyway, I left Pressure out of the Load Cases (at first), then went back and included 0.01psi for Pressure. Not that it changed anything.

In the results (Operating Case) one spring is allowing ~2½" drop when I would prefer only ~¼" drop. So I made that spring a User Defined with 10,640 #/in (it's actually 2 springs) and installed load 28,000#. That gave the large negative displacement. So, I upped the cold load to 30,000... same negative displacement. I eventually doubled the cold load to 60,000# and it still drops ~ 2½".

Then it started giving me messages like:
"Hanger Loads exist in the model but were not included in the hanger restrained weight run"
followed by:
"Hanger Loads exist in the job but were not included in the hanger operating load case"
whereupon it lets me into the Load Case Editor.

What is wrong with this line up of cases:

L1: W         HGR Rigid
L2: W+D1+T1+P1 HGR Ignore
L3: W+D1+T1+P1+H OPE As Designed
L4: W+P1+H        SUS As Designed
L5: W+D1+T1+P1+H+WIN1  OPE As Designed
L6: W+D1+T1+P1+H+WIN2  OPE As Designed
L7: W+D1+T1+P1+H+WIN3  OPE As Designed
L8: W+D1+T1+P1+H+WIN4  OPE As Designed
L9: L3-L4 EXP  (Algebraic)
L10: L5-L3 OCC (Algebraic)
L11: L6-L3 OCC (Algebraic)
L12: L7-L3 OCC (Algebraic)
L13: L8-L3 OCC (Algebraic)
L14: L4+L10 OCC (Scalar)
L15: L4+L11 OCC (Scalar)
L16: L4+L12 OCC (Scalar)
L17: L4+L13 OCC (Scalar)

Wind Loads are done as I always do them... one each from N,S,E,W ASCE#7

I've used this load case setup many times, but not with Displacements (D1)... have I missed something somewhere?

I hope I'm overlooking something obvious.

Loren at COADE/Intergraph set me back on the straight & narrow.
I forgot to go back and add the hanger loads (H) in the 2 HGR cases after changing one to a User Defined Hanger.

As usual, the longer it takes to figure out a computer problem, the more obvious the solution. :p
