Could anyone tell me how to calculate the torque on a rotational connection that supports a purely axial load and accelerates at 8 deg/sec^2?

The rotational mass moment of inertia is easy to calculate; just look at the configuration of the load which in all likelyhood is cylindrical in shape and use one of your basic physics equation for that value. Also don't forget to add the frictional "torque" imposed on the bearings to the equation mentioned above.
