calculation of compression force iec 540 and 60811

iec 540 standard clause 8: value of force can be calculated by formula F = k * Sqrt(2* D * sigma - sigma square)

Where D = mean value of outer diameter of test piece.

What will be the value of D = for Shape conductor and outer pvc sheath e.g for 120 sq mm 3/c copper PVC/PVC ?....The discription for calculating D looks unclear in standard. what do you mean by "back"
