Hi everybody!

I'm about to prepare a set of calculations for a stamped pressure vessel, and it will be my first time contacting an authorized inspector for approval.

I want to ask if you know the basic structure he will want to find in calculations, relevant aspects, and anything you can tell me to try to obtain the approval at first try.

Important: I'm not using any software. Calculations are hand made.

Thanks a lot for your help!!!

Heyner.

Cannot answer this question without knowing what you intend to build. May be 3 pages may be 100.

Why not present the rough draft to the AI and ask him/her to go over it with you? Ask for the AI's input. You may find life easier.

I see...

In this case is a separator tank, 12m length and 3m diameter, elliptical heads, two saddles support and about 8 nozzles plus manhole with davit.

Do you suggest to have a preliminary calculations set and prepare the final calculations using the AI's help or requisitions? I found it great, but, any general provisions to prepare this info? Let's say:

1. Inputs (geometry, pressure, temperature)
2. Considerations (efficiency, material, etc)
3. Calculations (shell, heads, nozzles, saddles)
4. Drawings

Do you think that´s enough?

I wish I could be of more help. But without the prints and the intended use it would only be a guess. Review all of U-2 and UG-90. Complete your package in rough draft, ask for an informal meeting and present it to the AI.

heyner,

Why dont you review the output files of a software program used for vessel design/qualification ?

Check the COADE website & ask for a representative printout of a vessel calc.

There are other software packages that perform the code-check.....

Hi,

A general add to previous posts is to identify all Code references in the calculation. These would include referecnces for all applicable Code paragraphs & formulas addressed in the calculation.

I have never had to really "Present" any calculations to our inspector.

I handle division 3 pressure vessels, which require all calculations to be reviewed by a PE. Our inspector just checks to see that the calculations and drawings were reviewed and stamped. He does not actually go over the calculations to review them from an Engineering standpoint.

The calculations we do use were developed with the PE and the relavent code sections.

Hi,
I don't have much new to add, but deanc is right. Get your AI involved, early. The AI will steer you in the right direction. After all, your company is paying for this person's services. The AI can be a great asset to your company. Choose them well.

Do your homework. The AI will not do your work for you. The AI will be a great help on format and presentation questions.

Our AI liked to spot check calcs from time to time. It was part of his "mini audit" program. They are trained in calc review, and as I understand it, it is part of their certification. They will have no responsibility for the accuracy of your data and calculations.
