Hi Guys,

I am at a dead end! My model is setup, however my final FE results do not match my experimental results. My model is very complex and consists of ceramic Alumina oxide impact tile, kevlar/epoxy laminate backing plate and cart brass and lead projectile. Currently the model simulates complete penetration through the ceramic and kevlar laminate, however the goal is to have the bullet stopped by the ceramic tile and result in no damage except delamination of the kevlar/epoxy laminate. The model is completely made of solid elements (see image).

The material parameters for each material are defined using the following:

Alumina %96 Ceramic (Engineering Data Lib) - Johnson-Holmquist Strength Continuous model along with Density, Poly EOS, Principle Stress Failure and Crack softening failure.
Kevlar/epoxy laminate - Orthotropic Elasticity, Stress limits and strain limits, Damage initiation criteria and ply type.
Projectile - Lead (Engineering Data Lib)- Steinberg Guinan Strength, Density, shock EOS linear
- cart brass (Engineering Data Lib)- Johnson cook strength, density, Shock EOS linear

Any expert advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance. Sam
