cam material with good wear and corrosion resistance

Hi All,

I looking for suitable material for cam. It is the first time I am working with cam. what is the common cam material nowadays? My application is high load, low speed, metal to metal, both sliding and rolling contact, grease lubrication. The material needs to have good wear and corrosion resistant (for phamaceutical industry). I'm looking at stainless steel 304 because of its excellent corrosion resistance but it cannot be hardened (wear resistance is proportional to hardness). I think i need to achieve at least rockwell 60C. anything can be done on SS 304 to achieve 60C hardness?

if i use 400 series stainless steel, any processes can be used to enhance its corrosion resistance property?

i am a little bit confuse with all the secondary processes for stainless steel (or steel), eg. chrome plate, nitriding, nitrocarburizing, electroless nickel, case-hardening, cold working, PVD coatings, CVD coatings, ...

please help.

Any suggestions? any other material suggestion is welcomed!

Consider MP35N. MP35N is a multiphase quaternary nimonic alloy primarily composed of 20% chromium, 35% cobalt, 10% molybdenum, and 35% nickel. It is commonly used in the medical industry. With the proper coditioning, hardnesses of RC 55 can be achieved, with good ductility, and superior corrosion resistance, compared with 400 series martinsitic stainless steel. See AMS 5844 and AMS 5845.
 
Carpenter Technology offers a carburizing stainless steel alloy called Pyrowear 675 that may be a good fit for this application. The following blurb is from their website:

Pyrowear® 675 stainless is a carburizing, corrosion resistant steel designed to provide a case hardness in excess of HRC 60 combined with a tough, ductile core. The corrosion resistance of carburized Pyrowear 675 stainless is similar to that of Type 440C stainless, while the core toughness is similar to that of AISI 9310.
