Sometimes when I use steel beam due to the deflection limit for large span, for column I want the column width to match the beam flange width. Say for W 12 x 53 steel beam, the factored reaction force is 45000 lbf, I want to used 5 1/4" x 9 1/2" PSL beam as post, but just use the factored resistance of 5 1/4" x 7" PSL post (i.e. 51000 lbf). Does that fit the purpose or did I miss anything?

I don't see why not. It's not as though PSL has layup complexity like glulam etc. Obviously, if your just going to use tabulated values for posts, you'll need to ensure that there's consistency with respect to material properties.

HELP! I'd like your help with a thread that I was forced to move to the business issues section where it will surely be seen by next to nobody that matters to me:

PSL is acceptable as a column. I would recommend checking with the manufacturer, several of them provide load tables. See the link.

No reason you couldn’t, from what I understand the sizes designated as “columns” are just a lower grade version of the beams. Not sure if the people building it would feel great about the steel beam on wood column thing even though it works. I’d just as soon throw a couple of pipe columns in for it to sit on.

Sure, that's great for appearance sake I suppose, but I don't think I'd let that influence my column size too much. It's not like the outer portions of the beam flange are doing anything for you in bearing.

Clear the post application with the supplier, Weyerhaeuser significantly reduces Fc,parallel for PSL beams used in column applications.
