Can you Select a Coordinate Sys. when Importing Geometry?

Hey All,

I have a part where I created a coordinate system on. I need to import an IGES file of surfaces, these surfaces will be used to make a cut feature.

The problem I am having is that when I go to Import the surface geometry, it locates the geometry on the default coordinate system, not the coordinate system that I created.

I cannot for the life of me find a way where I can SELECT the coordinate system that I created to place the surface geometry >:-<

Is there a way to do this? Or does it always have to sit on the default coordinate system (origin)?


I know in Pro/E it asks you what coord.sys. you want the geometry to be located on, I got to believe that SolidWorts has the same functionality!

You may need to tzake the long way around...

SW does allow you to specify the CSYS used to export geometry (see options under the Save As dialog). Try importing the geometry, then re-exporting it using a user-specified CSYS to make a scrath file that is oriented the way you like it.

hmm, I never thought of that...that would work, but if I ever needed to move the imported geometry, I would have to do everything all over again.

I also thought of creating an assembly, and assembling the surface geometry to the coord sys. (I would make the surface geom. a SW part).
Then I can 'modify part in assembly', and create surface knit features referencing the 'surface-part'.
But there are two problems with this:
1. I don't want to have an external reference to an assembly, because this assembly would just be a 'dummy' assembly (client probably wouldnt understand how to modify it if they needed to).
2. If I need to move the geometry, I would have to go back into the assembly to do so.

It just seems a little hokey. All I want to do is drive the location of the imported surfaces via the coord system that I created.

Thanks for the response Trick, I may just do that if I can't find another method.
