Can you UT in lieu of nick breaks for the 12"-on-12" "branch" test

One assume the Code is API 1104 and this is for welder qualification. What does the Code say? When I was on the Code Committee 40 years ago, it was not permitted. Due to the geometry of the branch connection, I doubt that it would be permitted today.
