CanBus info/help 1

Hello everyone, I am involved in an application using an Isuzu engine driving an off highway vehicle. The engine is fully Canbus.

I am using a touchscreen for user interface, and a Modbus capable plc for control.

For the Canbus to Modbus interface I am using a BridgeWay AB7606, J1939 to Modbus.

My problem is that I am a Canbus newby, I have to map my Modbus memory locations to be able to receive the canbus messages, most of the messages from the engine bus will be broadcast, but I will also be selecting set engine RPMs by sending messages to the bus.

I have a list from Isuzu with the can codes but I am stumped from there.

Below is a description of the info I have so far;

I have the following from the ISUZU documentation:

Canbus

Engine oil pressure
SPN = 100
transmission repetition 500 msec

Arbritration field
P = 6
R = 0
DP = 0
PF = 254
PS OR GE = 239
SOURCE ADD = 0

Data Field
DL = 8
BYTE = 4
BIT = 8-1
DATA RANGE = 0-1000kpa
RESOLUTION = 4kpa
OFFSET = 0
DEFAULT DATA = 0

The configuration software for the BridgeWay AB7606 has the following in the J1939 Input and Output I/O Tables

Table Offset (I presume this would be 0)
Data Length ?
PGN ?
Target Address
Update Rate 500ms
Message offset ?

You may want to try an off the shelf controller like from Murphy, they have already done a lot of legwork.

I've tried the PLC thru bridge or gateway approach a few times, and always found it a lot of trouble for a smaller project.

Just a suggestion.

Hi,
we are repowering a locomotive with an electronic cummins engine, i dont intendto have any gauges per se i intend to use Murphy PVv1000 for display, a Twido Extreme to do any additional inputs and gear change on the Niigata Converter and use the CanJ1939 bus to share information. i am confident it will work Schneider say it should.
i am trying to do it as simply and as elegantly as i can , i shudder thinking of having to convert to and from modbus to talk to a display.
All of these have CanJ1939 as standard.

I've had a look at the SAE website Which document would you advise purchasing or is there a more inexpensive way.

Get J1939/03, its $59.00, $47.50 if you join. Seems like a good deal to me. I have the automotive standard and it was well worth the price for software development.

The Parker IQAN line has a nice set of hardware components for task like what you are doing. Be careful some of the fancy engines have a little display that conficts with the third party hardware. For example: on a system I put together with a Volvo turbo diesel I ended up removing the electronic display sold with the engine to get it out of my hair.
