The support at UGS is actually pretty good. They should have you up and running fairly quickly.

The UGS sales people will not be able to help. You can try GTAC, 1-800-955-0000.

The vendor deamon is the process that communicates between the UG code and the license management code. Did you install the FlexLM/FlexNet SW and the license file supplied by UGS?

If you did install FlexLM, the most likely problem is you do not have it configured to recognize your license file. This is actually a pretty common problem. If you call GTAC, they can walk you through the solution while you are on the phone.

First off, as Larry stated, you need to install FlexLM. Next, if you're using a dongle, you will have to install the sentinel driver for it. If your dongle is USB, then you will need to remove it BEFORE installing the sentinel driver (per UGS instructions). If the dongle is a parallel port dongle, you DO NOT need to remove it. I believe the default location is C:\Program Files\UGS\License Servers\UGNXFLEXlm\Hardware_Key. You will want to execute sentinelsystemdriver.msi to install the dongle driver. Be sure to plug your dongle back into the USB port before proceeding further, if you're using a USB dongle.

After that, run LMTools (Start -> Programs -> Unigraphics NX3 -> FlexLM Tools -> lmtools). Under the Services/License File tab, set the Server List to Configuration using Services (the lower tick box) and you should see Unigraphics License Server (uglmd) in the white box. Next, click on the Config Services tab and next to the Services Name it should read Unigraphics License Server (uglmd) in the pulldown. If not, use the pulldown & select it. Next, set the 3 paths below the pulldown. The default location for lmgrd.exe is C:\Program Files\UGS\License Servers\UGNXFLEXlm\lmgrd.exe. My path for the license file is C:\Program Files\UGS\License Servers\UGNXFLEXlm\ugnx3.lic. The default path to the debug log file is C:\Program Files\UGS\License Servers\UGNXFLEXlm\ugflexlm.log. Make sure the bottom two check boxes are checked ON and then press Save Service in the upper right.

Finally, go to the Start/Stop/Reread tab. Click Start Server, just to be sure the license server is running. Then press ReRead License File and see if you get any errors.

Before starting NX, it would probably be a good idea to see that your bundles are selected, so go to Start -> Programs -> Unigraphics NX3 -> FlexLM Tools -> License Options and make SURE your bundle is listed on the RIGHT side of the dialog under Selected Bundles. If it isn't, highlight the bundle name, then click the ADD button.

Now see if NX will fire up. If not, then call GTAC and have them walk you through the install. I did this off the top of my head, so if I left anything out, my apologies & hopefully someone will catch it if they read my response.

Good tutorial Tim! Have a star for that.

Cheers for that Tim, absolutely excellent!

Unfortunately, when I get this all done n I go do my server status enquiry im gettin a horrible message telling me,
(Error: 1 licenses, unsupported by license server)
horrible!!

Ima guessin' there's somethin wrong with my license file, its tellin me my server and it doesn't match anywhere in lmTools.
O licenses, cant live with 'em, can't kill without 'em.
Catch-22!!

Check out in FlexLM the log file. There is a button on the Services tab named "View log". The log file can give you an insight of what's hapened there. Like a wrong HostID for example ...

Did you edit the license file, putting your computers "name" in, replacing the placeholder name?

Everything should be designed as simple as possible, but not simpler.

Did you call the UGS GTAC helpdesk or your CSR for a new license file.

blooregard,

Gunman brought up a good point, which I left out. In your license file (ugnx3.lic), you will want to edit the SERVER name. I think by default, it's labelled as 'SERVER YOUR_HOST ...' or something to that effect, and you will want to replace YOUR_HOST with whatever the computer's name that is hosting the license.

If all else fails, call UGS as Ben suggested. They can/will walk you through complete installation.

Larry,

Not all NX licenses are that way. Some are node locked (mac address, as you mentioned) while others are tied to a dongle rather than the mac address. I'm not sure how UGS handles floating licenses....probably the same way, only using the mac address or dongle on the server.

If your license is for a dongle, you should see UG_HWKEY_ID in your license file, immediately following the SERVER entry. I can't remember what the exact wording is when your license is node locked.

You are right Tim but since he mentions that he had this at "home" I don't know of any provision to check out a license at home or remotely. Even if it is checked out, there has to be a way for flexlm to verify there is a license available to check out doesn't there?

There is a way to do it, but I'm not familiar with it. I believe you have to have your license server (be it the computer you actually use at work or a remote license server; whichever serves the license) accessible via the internet then you login remotely from there.

There are supposedly license borrowing options in FlexLM that allow you to borrow a license for a given amount of time, but I am unfamiliar with those options as well.

Would be nice if the original poster would let us know if the issue is solved or not ;o)

Sorry Tim! =/
Shoulda got back to ye, had to go home for Christmas and a house with no internet is a very good way of relaxing.

I've been in contact with the good CAD tech people and my license has got UG_HWKEY_ID straight after the server name. CAD tech people have opened shop again today so they're gonna help me through it.

As soon as its up n runnin I'll try n get all the details as to what went barmy and put it up here.
Thank you guys for the help, wouldn't have been able to describe to CAD techs if it weren't for ye

Oh no.

this may aggrivate you guys, but it amuses me quite a bit.

Tim, in his first reply mentioned a dongle. I had no dongle then, or SO IT SEEMED. (eep)
I got a new workstation sent you see and a new keyboard ... and they put, or "hid", the dongle under some red tape on the underside of the keyboard.

Sorry guys, I couldn't get in touch with the CAD tech people over christmas, but the solution really couldn't have been simpler.

Thank you for the help though, if anyone else ever has a problem concerning licenses this thread should be a massive help in understanding any problems

Thanks for replying, blooregard. Don't forget that if the dongle is USB then you need to remove it before installing the Sentinel device driver.
