I've recently installed Solidworks on a new machine (2004) and it refuses to run. I keep getting a error something like 'reference memory at "0000absadf" could not be read. click ok to terrminate or cancel to debug" I have no idea why this is happening, but I can't run Solidworks at all. Operating system is win2000 Pro, does anyone have any ideas ? It's good system so I don't think that I am lacking any hardware preformance.

Please help
thanks in advance

Then you should list your hardware to be sure.

This seems to me like it's a OS problem and not a SW issue. Reference memory error's usually occur if something is not right in the OS. The only thing you could try is to do a Clean uninstall and reinstall of SW. faq559-488

Here a list of the hardware specs,
p4 2.8
1gm ram
ATI Radeon 9600 video card
win 2000 pro

I have repeatedly tried reinstalling solidworks, it's just getting frustrating because I cannot pin point the proglem. If it is a hardware problem I'd like to figure out what it is before putting any more money into the system.
Thanks for the help :)

ATI Radeon 9600 video card is most likely one of your problems.

Radeon 9500 Pro/9600 Pro/9700 Pro/9800 Pro

WinXP 6.14.10.6360 07/25/2003 2004 = Red = Card has significant stability or repaint problems

First step would be to get a better card.

What SP is your OS running?

Do you clean the registry out when you uninstalled or before you reinstalled?

I agree with Scotts first suggestion, its most likely an OS issue.

That video card may not be certified but it still should not prevent SW from running. I run SW04 at home on a 9800 pro and it's a little glitchy but never fails to start.

If you are starting the program from a desktop icon, right click it and be sure the path is correct to the actual working directory. Maybe even use Windows Explorer and try to start the program directly from the EXE file in the SW folder.

Check your virtual memory size.

Check your EXACT Error Message at the MS Knowledge Base:

MS Knowledge Base

Win 2000 pro should be up to Service Pack 4 I believe but double check that as well.

End any unecassary processes or applications that are running.

Cool thanks for the info. My OS is running win2000 sp 4 which I believe is the lastest. I'll check the path for the SW icon as well as you suggested aamoroso. I did clean the registry after I uninstalled but I'm for sure that I got everything. I'll try uninstalling again and taking a closer look.

-thanks again
