Dear sirs,

Could anyone please explain that To minimise the power consumption of reciprcating compressor, which better type of capacity control to be adopted.
Could u give any references regarding the subject

Thanks & regards

First of all derive the correct maximum pressure setting for your compressor. Better method is to have a proper receiver sizing and having your compressor turned on and off. I heard that Chicago Pneumatic is using VFD control for recips but I doubt about the possible savings.

Description about your application can help us understanding the system.

mm1975:

There are various ways to minimize a reciprocating compressor's power consumption:

1. Suction Valve unloaders;
2. Clearance Pockets;
3. Variable speed control on the compressor driver;
4. On-Off control.

You haven't stated the size of the compressor, the number of stages, the suction and discharge conditions, the gas being compressed, driver type, etc., etc. so we can't give a specific response to your un-specific case.

Generally, however, my choices would be:
1. Clearance pockets;
2. Variable speed;
3. Suction valve unloaders
4. On-Off control.

The best references I can cite are my personal operating experiences on reciprocating compressors.

I hope the above addresses your query.
