I am not an expert in the production of carbide, and have been posed with a question to which I do not know the answer. In tungsten carbide processed with a cobalt binder (intended for industrial use cutting tools) what are the factors that can promote the formation of eta phase? Is the carbide grain size be a significant factor? If so, how? Any references that are supplied would be helpful.

Try a Google search for Eta phase. You should get one of our web pages with information from Valenite (used with permission).

Typically it is a mixing issue. The tungsten, carbon, cobalt, etc. powders are hard to mix perfectly.

If you go to our web site you will see that we have a book online called “Building Superior Brazed Tools.” There is more material there about what makes good and bad carbide.
