Hi,

I am trying a simple comparison between a tube beam made from steel and and one dimensionally the same but carbon tube but while I have data for the steel tube have little for the carbon tube. Construction of the tube would be prepreg woven material aligned 0 - 90 along the axis.

Can anyone provide figures for Young's modulus, Tensile strength and yield strength. I'll not be holding anyone to account for the figures and no, I'm not designing an aircraft!

Thanks

Probably too late to be of use, but some poking around on manufacturers websites can get you some "typical" properties for woven carbon prepregs.

Example: 2 x 2 Twill Carbon/Epoxy, 42% RW
0 deg Tensile Strength 700 MPa
0 deg Tensile Modulus 60 GPa
90 deg Tensile Strength 745 MPa
90 deg Tensile Modulus 60.5 GPa
0 deg Compressive Strength 540 MPa
0 deg Compressive mod. 53 GPa
90 deg Comp. Strength 560 MPa
90 deg Comp. mod. 53 GPa
Interlaminar Shear Strength 71 MPa
In-Plane Shear Strength 95 MPa
In-Plane Shear mod. 3.9 GPa

Thanks Martin. Input much appreciated.
