Carbon Steel pipes for underground firefighting piping

Can we use carbon steel pipes confirming to ASTM 106, Grade B, STD-40. for underground firefighting piping system.
What is the AWWA equivalant standards for the carbon steel confirming to ASTM 106, Grade B, Std-40.

There are a series of AWWA C2XX standards including AWWA C200 for steel water pipes, couplings and many different coating and lining systems. However, I don't believe steel pipe was really approved for underground fire protection service per e.g. NFPA 24 standard until the early 2000's (when I believe steel was conditionally petitioned in). I don't know the reasons for this; however, I do know small diameter (less than man-entry size) steel piping may be generally less available with combinations of e.g. durable for long-term water service Shop applied cementlinings and field joining systems designed to work with same, than are say ductile iron piping long listed per NFPA 24 for such service. In any case, piping should be appropriately certified or listed by the manufacturer for such service, and NFPA 24 standard in any case contains many requirements that should be understood for design and construction of serviceable systems.
 
We just finished a fire water system using ASTM A106 Gr. B piping per the clients request. We coated and wrapped the underground portion and recommended galvanizing the piping to protect against corrosion, however the client said no to the galvanizing. I would recommend reading NFPA section 10 for buried piping to get a list of approved materials covered by AWWA. Hope this helps.
 
The underground firewater piping can be CS (A106-B/A53-B), DI, cement lined steel, or HDPE, with proper installation procedures. I used them in the Refinery before.
 
Be aware that the latest editions of NFPA 13 & 24 (2016) no longer lists steel pipe under Table 10.1.1 Manufacturing Standards for Underground Pipe.
 
I thought NFPA-11 required the use of galvanized pipe with no field welded joints
 
No carbon steel allowed underground. Steel may be protected but my interpretation is that due to mic corrosion, that is a problem that has involved several cases recently, and some special materials have prooved to be innefective on this, underground pipes that cannot be inspected may be abandonned and future use is uncertain.

The AWWA M11 standard adresses steel pipes for water, if you stiil want to look for it.
