Career Advice for a 3.1 Welding Inspector

Could someone give me any advice on which would be the best way to go in my career as regards a new course.
Iam 3.1 Welding Inspector who has the chance to d o a course at distance learning. I want to work my way up to a Mechanical Engineer or some line in Quality Assurance. Which course should i am for as my money is limited at the moment.
