I am a woman Resident Engineer currently working in California. I have a civil engineering and construction management background. I need advice on what career paths are available beyond this point. I am happy with my current job, but, eventually once I start a family I want to settle down at one place and not keep moving from job to job. What career path should I choose. Has anyone with similar background switched to real estate or residential property management or similar jobs?

Back in the 1970's I was considering (and did) chance careers. I'll have not forgotten the sound advice from the classic book on this subject "What Color Is Your Parachute"
It is really a "numbers" thing...
Up through age 35, remake yourself into any career field you want.
After age 35, stick to your (most successful, or preferred) field - but assorted combinations of job specialties, within that field and different employers are ok.

You seem to assume that living in one place requires changing fields- not the case. I would venture to say that the great majority of civil engineers stay put as opposed to moving from contract to contract.

JStephen, I have moved to 6 different jobs in 3 years. For the first time in three years, I am 5 minutes away from home, I have always had to commute long distances in the past. If I stay with my company, this is how its going to be, so I am exploring my options and trying to find a solution to the problem. The only way I see is by changing careers or switching jobs.
