Hi,
I have friend who recently graduated with a BS in Telecom Engr. He is having a difficult time finding a job. I was wondering are there any specific certifications that can be obtained that may be beneficial in helping him start a career. Looking for certs that can be obtained while studing at home rather than going back to school. Any insite is appreciated.

What is a telecom engineer, and where is he applying? Telecom engineer seems like a very myopic title, as opposed to most engineers, who have very broad scopes...ie mechanical, electrical, civil.

I have never heard of a Telecom Engr. But, if that is what he likes, it would be in his best interest to learn fiber-optics (if he hasn't already). Any telecommunications company would look at that. The problem with telecom companies is they are always merging... laying off/hiring. Tell him to keep trying, he may have to commute or move. Good luck.

His degree is actually a B.S. in Computer Engineering He just had a focus in telecommunications. Similat to a Civil Engineer focusing in Structures, Transportation, or Enviromental.

Most of our IT support people have a BS in computer engineering. Is this not an area he is interested in? IT support is a booming business expected to grow by leaps and bounds in the next 3 years (fastest growing engineering sector). But then IT support is sort of boring. Maybe he/she is looking for more of a design job putting together systems or something. In that case, I would be searching for jobs without the telecom in the title as this would limit the results greatly. There are certifications such as CNE, MSCE (?), etc that can be had without going back to college. Some employers place a lot of credit on these certifications. Good luck to him.

At my current job I get to meet a lot of Radio Frequency Engineers. They work for the various cell phone companies and are involved in network expansion. Perhaps your friend can explore employment possibilities with these companies?
