Hey guys,
as per my understanding we cannot cast Stainless steel and machine it, correct?
So I am thinking of cast iron to use for part which has to bear some shear load... Can someone tell me Cast Iron types which have higher Yield strength?

and another question between SS 302 and SS 329 which has higher is compartable at high temperatures?

I got some info, it does not give me the material number for cast iron

Hi,
Just a suggestion, don't you think you may get more feedback by posting your inquiry in Materials Engineers forums?

Not correct, it's done every day. Stainless is a bit trickier to machine than, say, grey iron, but it's pretty well understood these days, and can even be considered routine given the availability of carbide tooling and pressure feed coolants.

Frank1344, I'm trying that option too, Thank you :)

btrueblood, Sorry buddy I am not aware of Stainless steel machining, I think it is hell of a cost anyways Thank you

Stainless material has always been 'expensive' because of components mined in perpetual war zones, and more recently because the Chinese are buying it up to make nice stuff for Walmart, but it is machinable, and cost- effective for many applications.

Ask your metal supplier for pricing on representative forms and quantities for your application, and ask your tooling supplier for help with the machining parameters you need to predict cycle times. The machining speeds are not a whole lot different from those for cast iron.
