CATIA Downward Capability

I used a V5R20 version to design some CATpart files and used the downward capability feature to allow me to open them on a V5R16 version I have at home. When I open the CATparts, the solid appears red and the tree just shows "Part Body" and "Solid.1". The update icon appears next to the "Part Body" listing in the tree and when I update it the solid disappears and the "Solid.1" in the tree has a green diamond-like shape next to it. My understanding of the downward capability is that I would be able to adjust the design of the CATpart from version to version, is this misguided? I can't find anything else concerning this problem so I am seeing if they are some experts on here that can help me out. Thanks in advance.

I've had pretty much the same experience. Its really not downward compatible, as they claim, it just gives you a dumb solid you can't do anything with.

Again, I haven't tried it much but when I have its always given me a dumb solid.

well if you buy catia you will have the current version at home.

Spending $30k will not however fix how the salesmen sell the term 'downward compatible'. It would be a great way to piss off the wife though.
