CATIA to IGES loses component names

Hello,

Good morning, we are having an issue when we save a CATIA V5R16 assembly into IGES.

When we open the IGES file in either Pro/E or SolidWorks some of the component names do not come through (e.g. instead of getting the component name "bracket" we get SUBMODEL 101 or IMPORTED 6 in the feature trees of Pro/E and SolidWorks).

We ensured that the Component Instance Name, the File Name and the Part Number will match in CATIA (e.g. they are all named "bracket", yet we still have this problem).

Your ideas, thoughts and suggestions are welcome.

Thanks,

Joseph

Hello Joseph.

If you recall, I had told you in the other thread that you would encounter problems with IGES from Catia to Pro/E. I probably should have qualified that by saying that you will run into problems with IGES from Catia, period. (it's a bad format, and Catia has a notoriously bad IGES translator)

On the models that this is happening to, are you getting good translation of the solids - and have you opened the IGES back into Catia first, to see if the problems originate with the Catia data?

I have to reiterate - IGES is NOT a very good format for translating, especially between Catia and Pro/E. My suggestion is still that you use STEP, if at all possible, or check into the Multi-CAx plugin for Pro/E, if you're doing any amount of this type of work.

Hello all,

Thanks again for your help.

This appears to be a bug. It worked well in R14 and it is busted in R16.

We have contacted our Reseller and will find out if there is a service pack that fixes this.

Cheers,

Joseph

Hello,

Here is the problem. If the file names of the parts are longer than 8 characters, then the file name info will not appear in the IGES file.

This is a limitation with CATIA.

The best work around is probably a macro.

Thanks,

Joseph
