CATIA v5r19 joins

Hello guys.

I'm creating some part in CATIA v5r19 and I'm a bit confused about one of it's nuance.
I created some sketches and want to divide some of them to couple of JOIN's. Sometimes I simply click JOIN and just pick lines from sketches and sometimes as I click on some line CATIA picks whole sketch. I did not use "Object -> Output feature" in any of my sketches.
Does someone know what it is about?

this is how I see it:

Sketches can contain 2D and 1D element, if the sketch is only 2D elements, then the join will pick the full sketch with 1 click, if the sketch is a mix of 2D and 1D, then you will have to pick each sub element individually.

if you create a rectangle in a sketch, then when you exit the sketcher workbench, the join will pick the complete sketch.

if you create a rectangle and 1 point (not construction), and exit the sketcher, the join will pick only the segment you select.

You may have had the "Feature Element" and "Geometrical Element" filters on or off.
