Catwalks

We are installing an emergency generator (230kVA) with a belly tank and are debating the need for a catwalk. The fuel storage tank and the catwalk were originally supposed to be 36"H, now they are 33"H. According to OSHA, what is the maximum height the generator can be before it needs a catwalk for servicing? I've designed a few catwalks before(despite being an HVAC engineer), but never had to question a catwalk's applicability in general.

Without double checking - I think it is 6'. You can go to OSHA.gov and find it.

BUT falling even 33'' can be real nasty and expensive - since the injuries are typically strains and pulls that just don't go away. A broken bone usually heals pretty quickly.

If this thing is going to need to be serviced frequently - I would strongly recommend a catwalk.

The action level in General Industry is 48 inches however, I would recommend that whatever height you propose to install a catwalk that it is protected by standard guardrail or an HLL that arrests a fallen individual before contact with a lower level.
