I work for a utility company that supplies natural gas. We have a building that houses to large compressor engines. I'm telling my superiors that we need to apply for a building permit if we want to make structural alterations to the building. They claim that since we are a utility company we do not fall under the jurisdiction of the CBC. Below is the wording from the CBC

Section 105.2.3 A permit shall not be required for the installation, alteration or repair of generation, transmission, distribution or metering or other related equipment that is under the ownership and control of public service agencies by established right.

I believe the above statment exempts the company from getting permits for the compressor engines but does not exempt us from the permit requirements for the structure that houses them. This structure has workers going in and out of it all day. I have been trying to find some commentary on the CBC clarifying the statement above.

Has anyone else dealt with this issue and how was it resolved?

You are correct. Your company's exemption does not apply to the building. Check with the building jurisdiction and you would most likely get the same answer.

I've done some work for a gas utility co. where they remodeled some of their buildings and the work required permitting from the city.
