Is there a guideline specifying the minimum distance between the ceiling and a pipe? the pipe will be supported by a hanger.

I have seen small bore utility pipeing straped to the underside of the ceiling.

There probably are some limitations if the piping is for fire protectionm services.

The "take-out distance" for each piece of hanger hardware needs to be summed up for each particular size of pipe to detrmine the minimum allowable for installation. There is no "code" requirement that I know of.

If your pipe is hot and will have thermal expansion your pipe clamps will move (with the pipe) with respect to their origanal location. You need to make sure the hanger rods are long enough that the movement won't be restricted. The angle that your rod swings should be 4 deg or less from pin to pin.
