I am currently developing a ceramic pump for a custom application that will pump an alcohol based solution.
Does anyone know what the allowable clearance is for a pump design where the piston/valve/cylinder set is sealed by the fit of the piston into the cylinder.

Thanks,
Randy

Right off hand the only positive displacement pump that used the piston to set the head clearance is the Milton-Roy pump with ball checks, not poppets. the use of an alcohol carrier does present a problem. flashing when the piston reverses. there is compensation valve that will re mediate this problem if it stays in play. We also raise the inlet pressure to the pump to help with this problem. Depending on your demands on the pump capacity there are several smaller PD pumps that can do the job. One use for this pump is for injecting a ceramic slurry , alcohol carrier to correct stingerd in boilers.

Talk to the guys at Coors, they have a lot of experience machining ceramics and can give you a feel for the fit.
