Change one of multiple equal parts in assembly

Assume the following situation:
Assembly1:
part 1
part 2
part 2
part 3
part 4

I'd like to make a change to one of the part 2's, without changing the other one, so one of them needs a new number.
However, when I select the 2nd 'part 2' and do save as... (to 'part 5' for example) the first one changes it's name as well.
I can do a replace component on the first one then to get back a part 2, but that doesn't seem like it's the right way to do it.

Can anyone help me out here?

That's the way it works, when you open an assembly where the same Part file appears two (or more) times in the assembly, while each 'occurrence' is a unique Component, they are all pointing to a single 'instance' of the part file. When you make that Part file the Work Part so that you can edit it and then perform a Save-As operation, you are actually changing the 'instance' which will update both 'occurrences'. Therefore you will need to then go back and perform a replace component operation to get two unique Components, each with their own 'instance' of their own Part files.

Note that if there are only two 'occurrences' of the same Component then it doesn't really matter what you do as the number of steps will be the same, but if there are several 'occurrences' of the same component and you're only going to changing ONE of them it might be easier to open just the Part file that you're going to change while NOT opening the Assembly, make your changes and do your save as, then open your Assembly and now you only have to do the Replace Component operation on the single Component which you wish to be represented by the newly edited and renamed Part file.

Hello Walter,
One thing that John failed to mention is that in NX8 there is the ability to make unique of a single occurrence of a component within the assembly.
I know that you are working in 7.5 but something to look forward to.

Jurgen

Will the NX8 make unique operation do what the OP wants and John explained or will it be more like Promotions and modify the one promoted body in the assembly?

Ben,
As I see it the make unique will create a new part not connected to the original in any way.

Jurgen is correct, the new NX 8.0 'Make Unique' (which BTW was implemented in response to requests from people transitioning from I-deas) function does just that, it basically performs a 'Save-As' (or at least peforms that first part of that process as you will still need to do an actual Save operation before any of these changes are permanent) and then a 'Replace Component' operation in a single step.

Ben,

Good point. Yes, NX 8.0 "Make Unique" will allow one component occurrence to be save to a new name while maintaining the other occurrence(s) with the original name (as long as the component part has been saved at least once (so that the unmodified occurrence can maintain the original name).

Thanks, we're waiting for 8.5 to make the change so I'll have to be a bit more patient.
