Changing Dimension Text in Pro/E Drawing 1

I am trying to change some dimensions in a Pro/E 2001 drawing to letters instead of the numerical dimension values. However, when I use the @S command in the dimension properties dialog and put in the letter I want into the Name box, it won't allow me to use the letters I want because it claims they are already in use or are reserved. Is there any other way to display nothing besides the text of your choice (no numbers) besides using the @S symbol command, or is there a way for me to clear out all of the symbols in a drawing so Pro/E isn't telling me they are reserved? Thanks.

To display text verses the actual dimension you would need to change the @D to @o for override. But when you do this any datums or GD&T are no longer displayed with the dimension.

Thank you very much for your quick reply. This problem has been driving me nuts for quite a while and you have solved it completely. Thanks again.

I have a related question on the ability to switch the symbol for a dimension for example if you want to have a relation between d53 and d300

d53=d300/2

doesn't this cause problems? I thought during regeneration the dimensions are assigned from first to last based on dim symbol number d1,d2,d3 etc.

If I wanted to switch the symbol so that d53 would have a higher dim number than 300 so I wouldn't have regeneration problems, is it possible.

I know that there is a way to do this through expressions on UG and it's quite easy. I thought I had done this with Modify Dim Symbol before, but I have seen the reserved symbol error when doing this before. Are there any workarounds for doing this with out error messages?

If I understand your question correctly, there should not be a problem if your dimension d53 was assigned a higher number than the other (i.e. d301).

Keep in mind that dimensions symbols act like pointers. So you can rename it to anything you like (i.e. d301, length, george, etc). The sequence in which Pro/E evaluates these symbols is dependent on the order in which the relations are written.

As an example, if I write:
d300=length/2
d53=d300

It would first evaluate d300, then d53. But if I write:

d53=d300
d300=length/2

I would run into problems, since d53 is evaluated before d300, and will not necessarily have the correct value. Using the "Sort Relations" option can remedy this problem.

Hope this helped
