I am looking for a suitable way of sealing channel to shell joint at a BEU vertical heat exchanger.
I have thought to use two ASME B16.5 flanges, for shell and channel, in combination with a typical spiral wound gasket of the same class.
As a result no o-ring or planiflex gasket will be used, as it was common to some HEX I have seen in past.
I want to know if the proposal joint method i.e. to joint HEX body flanges as it was piping components, is suitable

pastyl, this is fairly common practice, assuming that your HX is pipe-sized in the first place.

B16.5 flanges (raised face) are fine as long as the gasket has the outer ring. TEMA requires a confined joint.

In PV Elite you have the option of selecting 'ANSI' standard flanges for the girth flanges of TEMA heat exchangers. Easy...
