Our steel supplier has given us test results for Q345B. For Impact Test at 0°C the results are 150, 151 and 177 J.

I don't have any experience in this area, but to me it seems very high when you consider the Australian Standard requires only 27J

Cheers.

kris, it is real because I have seen something similiar before. I bet grain size is super fine for this steel. But it is always better to verify it if it is a new supplier.

As noted; get to know your supplier. Steels qualifying as "carbon steel" can have excellent toughness. However, I once got "charpy" results from the Oldsmoble' test lab ( I assume I can say that since it is gone). They were suspecious, so we asked for the broken bars : They had cut "key-hole" bars, AND tested them backwards.

blacksmith37,
I love it! Reminds me of the time when I discovered some Charpy's were run backwards.
