Charpy V-Notch testing

Does anyone have any information regarding the details of this test (including when in casting/rolling process it is performed)?<br>

Also, I am looking for any information that would indicate what percentage of A572 Grade 50 steel passes the requirements of this test listed in the AISC ASD Manual (Chapter A, Section A3. c.Heavy Shapes).

Look up ASTM E23. It must be done in the final material condition, since the impact values generally go down as hard working is performed; the material loses ductility and gains strength. <br>

Since ASTM A572 indicates that Charpy testing is a normal supplemental test, and the material is specifically intended to be notch sensitive resistant, I would say that it is certainly available. Call a stocking supplier such as Ryerson or Jorgensen, who will give the straight scoop.
 
I would suggest that you contact Nucor, British Steel, or Trade Arbed as they are the major producers of A572 Grade 50 Group 4 & 5 sections.
 
I beleive that ghillis almost said everything. I just want to add that Charpy V-notch test is done under certain temperature, which depends on environmental conditions. This test is required for welded connections, rather than base metal, under severe environmrntal conditions, especially when dynamic loading is present. For any specific matal, the supplier should submit a material certificate, containing a test certificate. If Charpy test is not included, you may order it as an additional test.
 
Why do bcc metals go through brittle tough transition and fcc metals do not?
