Hello all,

I was going through a technical document and came across with the following concepts: scale protection factor, oil protection factor and glycol protection factor. I did some Internet research but wasnt unable to find satisfatory definitions. Can someone help me please to unnderstand what does this mean?

I believe they are degrees of personnel protection against exposure to various contaminants. Perhaps a visit to OSHA website and review of MSDS's would yield some results.

These are factors that are to be applied to the predicted uninhibited CO2 corrosion rate of carbon steel in oil and gas production. They all try to provide a 'numerical mitigation' for reduction of corrosion rate. The scale protection factor is related to the propensity for formation of a protective iron carbonate corrosion product film. The oil protection factor addresses the wetting of the carbon steel with oil providing a barrier to water. The glycol protection factor deals with the reduction in corrosion rate observed when glycol is added to the corroding system (essentially 'diluting' the water and altering mass transfer).
