I am looking for some software, ideally free and internet based, to help our internal sales guys determine what a chemical is in english given the chemical symbol.

I have had a good look out there but cannot seem to find what I am looking for. It has to be bourne in mind that some of these guys have little or no chemical background.

What do you mean by "chemical symbol?" If you mean formula, such as C5H12, then you have a problem, because there may be multiple compounds having the same formula. There is always the IUPAC name, which defines a compound fairly well, and you may find listings of equivalent common names or trade names. I do know that the DIPPR database provided by various distributors of it provide for looking up compounds by formula or name, and synonyms for a given compound will be shown.

Dick,

That's exactly what I am after. I will have a look for the DIPPR databse, is it online anywhere?

DIPPR isn't free, but it is good.

BYU is the present contractor for the DIPPR database project under AIChE. They distribute the database with the DIADEM access software themselves, and they also provide it to secondary distributors. You can email them at: dippr@byu.edu. Some or all of the distributors can be found by doing a Google search on: dippr database distributors.

Graham has a software called Vacworks II that has a listing of an awful lot of compounds with symbol/names principally vapors that they might have to transport with a jet.

You can get a copy of the software sent to you by visiting their site at
