I've looked at ASTM A-751 and E-1806 and have not found the number of chemical tests to perform on a given sample. Is there a Standard that establishes how many OES readings should be taken per sample?
I see E-59 has been withdrawn so I cannot check that Standard and don't know if it was addressed in E-59

I do not know the standards, but I use mean of 3 burns in my reports,assuming burn quality is good in all cases.

QAFitz;
Re-read ASME SA 751, Section 5, it is there in terms of cast and heat analysis.

QAF, I have always felt that the number of individual shots is up to the lab. You have to be able to statistically defend your selection.
Our XRF times are based on meeting a level of precision that we set internally.

Thanks one and all for your time and input.

If you are interested specifically in OES, then review ASTM E 415 Standard Test Method for Optical Emission Vacuum Spectrometric Analysis of Carbon and Low-Alloy Steel. It has the following:

13.2 Excite specimens in duplicate and report the average of the duplicate results.

Like Arun, our standard procedure is to test three spots per specimen and report the mean.

Cory
